Sport psychologists

Sport psychologists are experts in the understanding of the psychological factors affecting sport and exercise, and the application of this knowledge to enhancing sporting performance and personal development.

In Australia, only those who meet the requirements of state and territory registration boards are legally entitled to use the term "psychologist". Each state and territory has a Psychologists Registration Board, which oversees the practice of psychology and the behaviour of psychologists. The public can check whether an individual is registered to practise as a psychologist in their state or territory by contacting the local Psychologists Registration Board.

Sport psychologists are registered psychologists who have undertaken additional specialised training, beyond that required for registration as a psychologist. Often, this extra training has involved completing a further two or three years of university study, leading to the completion of a Masters or Doctoral degree in sport psychology.

Psychologists who complete this advanced training are eligible for full membership of the Australian Psychological Society's (APS) College of Sport Psychologists. For details about the College, click here.
