The goal for athletes is to try perform to the best of their ability all of the time. Sometimes, this comes easily; at other times, things do not go so well. Many athletes or teams go through a period in which their performance is below the usual standard. For some it is a bad day, or maybe a bad week; for others, it becomes a slump that lasts for months.
Sometimes, the reason for a problem in performance is technical or strategic; at other times, a performance slump is related to an athlete's thoughts and expectations about their own performance.
Sport psychologists can assist individual athletes and teams to identify the reasons for a decline in performance, and to explore strategies for turning performance around.
